There are two type of reference attachment in microstation
Direct Attachment:
Consider below image, as an example File A, File B, File C are attached to File D. After attachment we can see the content from File A, File B and File C in File D along with the content of File D. File A, File B and File C are said to be in direct attachment to File D.
Nested Attachment:
Consider below image, If we attach File D (with File A, File B and File C attached to it), to another File E. File E, File D is said to be direct attachment to File D and File A, File B, and File C are said to be nested attachment to File E.
Now to see content of nested attachment the nesting must be on with nesting depth greater than zero.
If we attach the the File D to File E with nesting off, only content of File D can be seen in File E along with the content of File E. It means if the nesting is off only content from direct attachment can be seen in active file.
Nesting Depth:
Nesting depth is the level of nested attachment. For direct attachment nesting depth = 0, and for nested attachment nesting depth > 0.In above example File A, File B and File C are level 1 nested attachment to File E. So to see the content from File A, File B and file C in File E File D need to be attached to File E with nesting depth = 1.
Now lets say we attached File P, File Q and File R to File A, File B and File C respectively, the File P, File Q and File R said to be level 2 nested attachment to File E and to see the content from File P, File Q and File R as well into File E the the File D need to be attached to File E with nesting depth = 2.
